Teen Patti: Gameplay, Rules, and Variations

What is a Teen Patti?

Teen Patti is a card game that involves some features of the Poker game. It is a gambling game that originated in subcontinent countries and is very popular in Asia. In foreign countries, Teen Patti is known as Three-card Brag.

How to play Teen Patti?

Teen Patti is played by 2 to 7 players and 52 card packs are used without jokers. Very similar to other card games, the Teen Patti game starts by placing a bet. Normally, there is a fixed amount in place so that players can bet before the start of the play or before the cards are distributed. When a player places the bet then the initial amount (boot amount) is collected from everyone playing the game and each player is dealt three cards face down. The initial amount (boot amount) is a very small amount of cash at stake which is kept in a pot and the pot is placed in the middle of the table.

Once the players are dealt three cards, the next step is to make a call or a raise. If you have played some card games like Poker before, you must be aware of these two terms. To make a call indicates that the player will continue in the game, but won’t raise his bet, whereas, making a raise means that the player will be adding cash in the pot, by risking to win or lose more than the first bet. Betting on Teen Patti is not the same as poker. In Teen Patti, you are required to place all the bets in equal amounts, which means if a player makes a bet of 2 coins with another player placing 4, the previous player will have to place 4 additional coins instead of just 2 to the earlier 2.

Rules of Teen Patti game

In the Teen Patti game, Aces are ranked with the highest order and 2 is ranked with the lowest order. The goal is to get the top 3 card hands and increase the pot value before the game ends.

Here are the rankings of cards starting from highest to lowest.

Trail or Set

Three cards with identical numbers in them are the best hand you can get. However, if you get three twos that’s the lowest hand you can get.

Straight Flush

Three consecutive cards from the same suit.

Straight

Similar to a straight flush, where the unit will be different.

Flush

When you receive a flush, it means you got cards that belong to the same unit, but are not in a sequence. In this case, it’s important to compare the cards from the highest to the second-highest, to the lowest – when you compare two colors. The highest are A, K, and J. On the contrary, we have 5, 3, and 2.

Pair

Between two pairs, the one that has the highest value is the winner. In case the pairs have the same value, then the kicker’s card will determine the winner.

High Card

In this case, the three cards are not in a sequence, not all are from the same suit and there aren’t any two cards that have the same value. If two players have a common high card, the next highest card will be used to decide the winner.
